Add MyLiveChat to your Ghost site

Ghost supports MyLiveChat through Code Injection — paste the MyLiveChat code once into the site footer and the chat button appears across your publication. MyLiveChat lets you answer readers and customers in real time, and collect messages while you are offline.

Use this guide to add MyLiveChat to Ghost. The free plan includes one agent, unlimited chats, and unlimited websites — no credit card required.

Live chat setup guide

Step 1. Get your MyLiveChat code

Sign in to the MyLiveChat web console and click Deployment menu on the left. Choose Embedded Chat tab and copy the MyLiveChat code.

Step 2. Paste the code into Code Injection

  1. In Ghost Admin, go to Settings → Code injection.
  2. Paste the MyLiveChat code from Step 1 into the Site Footer box.
  3. Click Save.
  4. Open your site — the chat button appears on every page.

Check that live chat is working

Do not assume the install worked because you saw no error. Open your publication in a private browsing window and walk through this once:

  1. Look for the chat launcher on the page. If it is missing, view the page source and search for mylivechat to confirm the code is really being served.
  2. Start a chat as a visitor and send a test message.
  3. Sign in to the web console and confirm the message arrives and that you can reply.
  4. Close the chat and check the transcript is saved, so you know follow-up will work.

If your publication sits behind a CDN, clear its cache before deciding something is wrong. Check a post, a page and a membership screen so you know the code really is site-wide.

Common Ghost setup mistakes

  • The code went into a single post instead of the site footer. Ghost offers per-post code injection as well. Site-wide chat belongs in Settings → Code injection → Site Footer.
  • The code was pasted into the Site Header box. The Site Footer box is the right place, so the widget loads after your content.
  • A theme or CDN cache is serving the old page. Clear both before testing again.
  • Members-only posts were never checked. Footer injection does apply to them, but confirm it, because that is where paying readers ask their questions.

What happens next?

After setup, sign in to the web console to answer visitors from your browser. You can also use the desktop app from the download page if your team prefers it.

Want the AI to answer first? Point the AI assistant at your site content and it handles routine questions 24/7, then hands off to a human with the full transcript when one is needed.

Why add live chat to Ghost?

Ghost publications live on reader trust, and readers ask about billing, access, and content far more than you might expect. Chat lets you answer without an email round trip, and the offline form collects questions overnight so replies never get lost.

Because Code Injection is site-wide, chat is available on posts, pages, and your membership screens without editing your theme.

Ghost live chat FAQ

Does this work on Ghost(Pro) and self-hosted Ghost?

Yes. Code injection is available on both Ghost(Pro) and self-hosted installs.

Will it load on member-only posts?

Yes. Site Footer injection applies across your publication, including members-only content.

Will it slow down my site?

No. The widget loads asynchronously and does not block your page render.

Is it really free?

Yes. One agent, unlimited chats, and unlimited websites are free forever, with no credit card required.

Make the chat window fit your publication

Colours, position, language, the pre-chat form and your offline message are all set in your MyLiveChat dashboard rather than in your Ghost code, so you can change them without editing your publication again. See customization options for what can be changed, and visitor monitoring if you want to see which page a visitor is on before you reply.
